The Fire Attack Study

Underwriter Laboratories (UL) Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI) completed a series of experiments adding to their wealth of information to evaluate how firefighting tactics effect fire behavior, firefighters, and building occupants. The purpose of the study is to improve fire dynamics knowledge and thereby improving safety and effectiveness through full-scale testing and analysis.

The first part of The Fire Attack Study, Water Mapping, studies how water is distributed within a compartment when applied from the interior or exterior. The report for part 1 can be found here and on-line training here.

The second part of the study, Air Entrapment, explores how the fire stream can effect airflow in a compartment. The report for part 2 can be found here and the on-line training here.

Experiments for parts 1 and 2 were performed without the presence of fire. The third part of The Fire Attack Study, Full Scale Experiments, includes the results from 26 full-scale fire experiments and the effects of interior and transitional fire attack tactics. The report for part 3 can be found here.

The result of this work is another set of free, interactive on-line training course from UL. The course includes videos, data, and interactive examples to present the results of the fire research as well as tactical considerations to firefighters of all levels.
