The Pre-Flashover Compartment Fire and Fire Safety Engineering – A Review of Hand-Calculation Methods

While computer modeling is used for much fire research, there is still a need for the quicker and simpler hand-calculations. Hand-calculations are valuable in allowing a better understanding of the fundamentals of complex fire behavior.

This paper goes through an explanation of the basics and assumptions of fire behavior in the pre-flashover stages, and develops simple equations to model the fire behavior. Understanding these fundamentals of fire science will help firefighters to better understand fire behavior and thereby fight fires more efficiently.

    The Department of Fire Safety Engineering is responsible for education and research in Fire Safety Engineering and Risk Management. The scope of what we do is to a large extent interdisciplinary, and we are responsible for essential parts of the Fire Protection Engineering program on bachelor level, the Risk Management and Safety Engineering program, and the Fire Safety Engineering program on masters level. In addition, we are responsible for the education of PhD students in the field of fire safety engineering. Co-operation with other universities and colleges are carried out regarding both education and research.

  • Society of Fire Protection Engineers

    The Society of Fire Protection Engineers was established in 1950 and incorporated as an independent organization in 1971. It is the professional society representing those practicing the field of fire protection engineering. The Society has over 4500 members globally and over 60 regional chapters.

    The purpose of the Society is to advance the science and practice of fire protection engineering and its allied fields, to maintain a high ethical standard among its members and to foster fire protection engineering education.

    The Society supports the development of the annual Professional Engineer licensing exam in fire protection and the grading of those exams under the auspices of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Several volunteer committees and task groups work under the Society’s auspices on technical projects to further advance the state of the art.

    The Society’s activities include a series of educational seminars and short courses, technical symposia and conferences, books and publications, designed to advance the state of the art of fire protection engineering and provide technical information to the fire protection community. The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter SFPE Today, a peer reviewed quarterly Journal, and a quarterly technical magazine Fire Protection Engineering.
