It Depends: Descriptive Research into Fire Growth and the Chances of Survival

Report Date: January 2015

Modern home construction, layouts, and furnishings have changed the way that fires develop. The Instituut Fysieke Veiligheid (Institute for Safety) and Brandweeracademie (Dutch National Fire Service Academy) in the Netherlands have compiled this report, ‘It Depends’ - Descriptive Research into Fire Growth and the Chances of Survival, to help get information on modern fire behavior to both civilians and firefighters. They performed six instrumented live-fire tests in houses in the municipality of Zutphen to examine the fire behavior and survivability in various parts of the houses. The main findings were that fires progress and reach a ventilation-controlled state more quickly in modern homes. This report discusses these results as well as survivability and tactical considerations in an effort to bring more science into firefighting. The report was translated from Dutch to English by IFV in order to share these findings internationally and help firefighters around the world.
